Metals are essential for star formation and their subsequent evolution, feedback mechanisms in galaxies, and the evolution of the intergalactic medium. Reconstructing the cosmic history of metals, from Pop III stars to the present building blocks of large scale structure, is of fundamental importance. Most baryons reside in diffuse structures, in (proto)-galaxies and clusters of galaxies, and trace vast filamentary structures created by Dark Matter perturbations. Spectroscopy of diffuse matter with bright afterglows of Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) can probe abundances in star forming proto-galaxies and clusters to the era of reionization by the first stars. We discuss the status of this field, and discuss the prospects for a better understanding of Cosmic Chemical Evolution via swift GRB afterglow spectroscopy.
