Characteristics of the emission in the j = 1-0 lines of (C-12)(O-16) and (C-13)(O-16) near the supernova remnant W44 are described. A broadening of the line width is observed along with an intensification of the line strength, and a maximum in the column density at positions just outside the radio continuum shell. The mean velocity gradient indicates that the dense material lies in a partial shell expanding at about 4 km/s. It is shown that the energy requirements of the shell motion are easily met by the supernova. The observations suggest that the interstellar medium has been compressed and heated by the remnant, and the density enhancement produced in the ambient medium by the remnant is estimated.
