The argument for similarity between the compositions of cometary volatiles and interstellar molecules has been strengthened by analysis of CO(+) and CO2(+) emission from comet West. The strong 6300-A emission of oxygen atoms can be interpreted in terms of photodissociation of OH by the solar Lyman-alpha radiation, and not as being due to photodissociation of a speculatively large amount of CO2.
