Radiation Mechanisms, Sun: Flares

Scientific paper

The Lyα doublet in various hydrogenic ions has been observed previously in solar flares. Deviations in the intensity ratio from that expected on statistical grounds are interpreted here as arising from excitation of the ions by electrons in a beam. Such directed excitation leads to selective population of magnetic sublevels in the upper level, and hence to the emission of polarized and anisotropic radiation. The effects of such an electron beam on the ionization balance for Mg, and on line intensity ratios in He-like systems commonly used as diagnostics for the electron temperature, are also discussed.
