The adiabatic stability of rotating gaseous masses is investigated via the initial-value problem. Formal theory is developed first and then applied to various cases with and without a toroidal magnetic field to establish sufficient conditions for stability when the Eulerian change in the gravitational potential is neglected. In the absence of rotation, some of the sufficient conditions are also necessary for stability. The effect of viscosity and magnetic diffusivity on stability is also discussed in some special cases.
