Scientific paper

An estimate of the interstellar ultraviolet radiation field toward O Per
and zeta Oph has been obtained by studying the ionization equilibria of
interstellar C, S, Fe and Ca. The radiation field has a peak at about
1600 A and decreases more steeply toward shorter wavelengths, than that
indicated by the earlier calculations.
