The disruption of a star by a galaxy's massive black hole occurs only rarely, on the order of 10^{-4} galaxy^{-1} yr^{-1}, but the rate at which it occurs has implications for our understanding of the evolution of galactic cores and gravitational wave astronomy. In particular, tidal disruptions provide one of the few methods by which we may constrain the low end of the massive black hole population in otherwise non-active galaxies.
We will describe our efforts to identify tidal disruption candidates in X-ray observations of rich clusters of galaxies. Clusters of galaxies not only have large, well-defined populations that provide a strong alternative to field studies in terms of event identification, but also facilitate accurate determination of the rate. We will also examine some of the means by which the rate may be related to the cluster environment.
