Galaxy merger models predict rapid black hole growth and strong outflows late in the merger as the accretion rate increases. PKS 1549-79 is a powerful, low redshift (z=0.1523) active galaxy that displays observational characteristics consistent with being a young (proto-)quasar in a galaxy which has undergone a recent merger. As such local bright objects are rare, PKS 1549-79 is crucial for testing our understanding of galaxy activity and mergers. Our analysis of new sensitive XMM-Newton and Suzaku observations confirm that PKS 1549-79 is a buried quasar. However, in striking contrast to the predictions of galaxy merger models, we find no evidence for a massive, ionized outflow.
