An overview of the Eta Car phenomenon is given on the basis of ground
and space observations. Particular attention is given to the IRAS
images. It is concluded that Eta Car, initially with a mass greater than
100 solar masses, is presently an intermediate-type hypergiant with L =
5 x 10 to the 6th solar luminosities, in a rapid evolutionary stage.
