Radio Pulsars, Surveys

Scientific paper

In the past four years, the number of known radio pulsars has more than doubled to a current total of about 1500. Much of this increase has resulted from wide-area searches using a 13-beam receiver on the Parkes 64-m radio telescope. Most of the newly discovered pulsars are distant from the Sun and many are relatively young. Several new or probable associations with supernova remnants have been established and it is likely that many are associated with currently unidentified gamma-ray sources. Deep searches in the direction of supernova remnants containing X-ray point sources have resulted in the detection of young but low-luminosity radio pulsars, further increasing the number of believable pulsar - supernova remnant associations.
