Active Galactic Nuclei, Circumnuclear Regions
Scientific paper
I will review the physical properties of the circumnuclear region of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) as inferred by a variety of observations obtained during the past 10-20 years and focusing on the most recent results. I will also review some important implications of these studies on the unified models, on the contribution of AGNs to the cosmic background radiation and the connection between AGNs and circumnuclear star formation. Finally I will shortly discuss what is known about the evolution of these components at high redshift. Whitin this context I will also discuss the issue of obscured QSOs.
