This is an overview of the objectives, the present achievements, the development plans, of the large gravitational wave (GW) interferometric detectors. The present achievements of the Virgo and LIGO detectors and of related prototypes are very promising. The available space does not allow to give technical informations about all detectors and prototypes. These can be found at the internet addresses below, were they are permanently updated. The paper focuses more on the evolution of the field of GW detectors, as astrophysical instruments and observatories.
