During the past decade, there has been a renaissance of interest in celestial high-energy phenomena as revealed by satellite and ground-based observations. High-energy gamma-ray observations are addressing several key scientific questions: What are the mechanisms of particle acceleration and sites of cosmic-ray production in the universe? What are the origins and mechanisms of gamma-ray bursts and other explosive transients? What are the unidentified sources of high-energy radiation revealed by the Compton Observatory? What is the origin(s) of the apparently isotropic, diffuse extragalactic gamma-ray background? The status of efforts to resolve these and other questions are summarized in this paper.
