Sunspots: Distribution, Solar Orbital Period

Scientific paper

A possible longitudinal oscillation with a period of 19.86 years has been suggested by the study of the longitudinal sunspot distribution over the minima of the Wolf Cycle. It corresponds to the mean orbital period of the Sun around the barycentre of the solar system. The phase difference between the theoretical positions of the sunspot active areas on a sinusoidal path with a period of 19.86 years and the real positions appears to be not more than 45° (1/8 of the period). If the solar orbital period increases and exceeds the mean orbital period until 1/4 the phase difference increases until 90°. As the period becomes shorter, the phase difference becomes shorter too.
