Ground based gravitational wave detectors such as LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational--Wave Observatory) are now in operation. Plans for the space based gravitational wave detector LISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) are well underway, with a projected launch date of 2011. The goal of these instruments is to create a new field of gravitational--wave astronomy: using gravitational waves to observe highly relativistic processes in astrophysics such as binary black hole collisions and supernova explosions. Accurate theoretical predictions of waveforms will be crucial for the success of both ground based and space based detectors, although for very different reasons. In this talk I will provide an overview of gravitational wave astronomy and describe my own theoretical work on the binary black hole collision problem.
