The International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF) consists of VLBI positions measured at S and X band of 608 compact, extragalactic sources. The USNO has an extensive program to observe optical counterparts of ICRF sources. Techniques and program status are presented as well as first results from a collaboration with colleagues from Brazil. Furthermore, USNO is part of a product center for the ICRF, has started preparatory work for a Space Interferometry Mission key science proposal, and plans a next generation astrograph for a densification of the optical reference frame.
