A transit of Mercury over the solar disk will take place on Wednesday May 7, 2003. It will be the first transit of the XXI century, and will be visible from the five continents (although not entirely from all of them). Only from Europe, Asia and Africa1 will all the phases (from the first to the last contact) be visible. From a geocentric perspective, the phenomenon will occur between 05:12:52 UT and 10:31:44 UT, with a total duration of almost 5h20m. The maximum apparent approach between Mercury and the Sun will take place at 07:52:20 UT, with an angular separation of 11-48" (708") between their centers. At that time, the Sun will be in the zenith of a point of the Arabic Sea, to some 600 km of Mirbat, in Oman's coast. Mercury will show an angular radius of 6", and its disk will cover approximately 0.004information are herein presented.
