The U.S.Naval Observatory CCD Astrograph Catalog (UCAC) project started in early 1998 at Cerro Tololo, Chile, and currently continues inthe northern hemisphere from Flagstaff AZ, USA. The UCAC program is a major step toward a high-precision densification of the optical reference frame in the post- Hipparcos era. The second data release (UCAC2) for about 50 million stars is in Preparation and will supersede the first data release (UCAC1, March 2000). The release of the UCAC2 catalog is planned for March 2003.
