Interest in the Leonid meteor shower has grown considerably during the 1990s, as the prospect of very strong displays between 1997-2000 has drawn closer. BAA Meteor Section observations have followed the Leonids' activity pattern in the quiet-time years of the 1980s, into the initial rise in rates ahead of the possible major returns, starting in 1994. The 1995 return was particularly well observed from the British Isles under excellent clear skies, with a marked, sharp peak to ZHR about 40 around Nov 18d04h UT. Photographic observations allowed an accurate radiant position to be derived. Conditions were less favourable in 1996, when a broader, high peak (ZHR 40-70) between Nov 17d 03h-13h UT was seen from a few European locations and North America. This activity continued in 1997, but no 'storm' peak has yet shown itself. The returns of 1998/'99 are considered most likely to produce very high Leonid activity.
