Solar Eclipse: 1999 August 11

The total solar eclipse of 1999 August 11 has been a landmark in our future for so long that it still seems hard to believe it is over. For a few surreal moments the dictates of astronomy took centre stage in Britain: newspapers and TV warned - dare one say superstitiously - of various terrible consequences to come, hundreds of thousands of people nevertheless travelled southwest, and shops and offices closed their doors so that 'everyone might enjoy the spectacle'. Despite the cruel weather the country stood transfixed, and the BBC and the following day's newspapers for once did justice to the moment. Hundreds of BAA members decided despite the poor weather prospects (sadly fulfilled on the day) that this eclipse must be viewed from home; hundreds of others travelled abroad to the more certain climates of Turkey, Bulgaria or Iran. As this Journal went to press, reports were flooding in from observers all along the track from the Scilly Isles to Isfahan.
