It is pointed out that one of the most striking things about BL Lacertae objects is that many of them are nonstellar. A representative list of nonstellar BL Lac objects with appropriate comments about the nebulosity is provided. One, NGC 6454, is representative of a class of objects in which there are emission lines characteristic of ordinary field elliptical nuclei, but no detectable nonthermal optical source, and strong and highly variable short-wavelength radio emission. NGC 1052 and 4278 are other such galaxies. Photometry and spectroscopy have been used to study the nebulosity. On the basis of the observations, it appears that BL Lac objects and related sources are probably elliptical galaxies. Both NGC 4278 and 1052 show evidence of dust in the immediate environs of their nuclei, and the optical light, if any, from the variable nonthermal source may be absorbed.
