British optical astronomy which has undergone a revival since 1967, is reviewed with reference to the 1.2 m Schmidt telescope on Siding Spring Mountain in Australia. The telescope has been used primarily for wide area surveys of the Southern sky. Attention is given to observations of the cemented doublet NGC 1512/10 and the dynamic interaction of gaseous material in the spiral arms. Also discussed are the photographic capabilities of the Schmidt, i.e., near UV to near IR at f/2.5, with 40 sq deg covered by each photograph. It is also noted that the Schmidt is augmented by the Anglo-Australian 3.9 m telescope, which has a pointing accuracy of 2.5 sec RMS over the whole sky, coupled with extremely accurate tracking.
