Certain exact solutions to Einstein's field equations of general relativity describe black holes with interior space-time regions inaccessible to the space-time region in which the black hole first formed. However, it may be demonstrated that quantum vacuum effects, similar in origin to the attraction energy between two electrically neutral conducting plates, would cause an unbounded back-reaction, destroying this idealized interior geometry even in cases when no matter is falling into the black hole.
