The TIRGO project involves the mounting of a 1.5-m IR telescope at an
observatory in the Swiss Alps (3100 m above msl). The observatory and
its site are described, along with the telescope's design, structure,
control electronics, optics, beam-modulation system, and supplementary
optics. The present status of the project is briefly discussed.
