Some observational possibilities in the wavelength range from 0.8 to several hundred microns are discussed which might serve to corroborate or refute concepts about the cycle whereby matter is ejected from stars, condenses partially to form refractory grains, and is ultimately incorporated into comets, planets, and new stars. Attention is given to the opacity of interstellar dust, properties of cometary dust grains, and chemical reaction rates in contracting interstellar clouds. It is suggested that quadrupole emission from rotational lines of H2 can be used to derive information on the statistics of interstellar-cloud collapse and collisions. Prospects for determining elemental abundances in late-type stars are also noted.
