The contribution of astrometry to astrophysics is examined. Topics include the identification of stars, the determination of parallax and proper motion, the movements of stars which are components of multiple systems, and the dimensions and components of multistar systems. While a historical approach is used, it is emphasized that the development of astrophysics will require increasingly accurate astrometric measurements. It is suggested that the use of satellite-based instruments inaugurates a new era in astrometry.
