Observations of eclipsing and intrinsic variable stars are reviewed. A historical summary of variable-star observations is given, and associations of variable-star observers are discussed, along with photography, spectra, and photoelectric photometry of variable stars, observations of variable stars in globular clusters and the Magellanic Clouds, computations of orbits of eclipsing variables, and correlations between the physical characteristics of variable stars. The literature on variable stars is examined in detail, especially catalogs and identification charts, and the number of known variable stars in the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds is evaluated. Attention is also given to the classification of variable stars, statistics on variable stars, the observed distribution according to type, special surveys of variable stars, and an estimate of the total number of variable stars in the Galactic system.
