The extended nebulae observed around a number of symbiotic stars are not planetary nebulae, but share with them many similarities that make symbiotic stars as key objects to investigate the effects of binarity on the mass loss from evolved stars.
The links between symbiotic stars and planetary nebulae, the possible amount of misclassification, and some of the most recent results in the field are briefly reviewed.
