First results from a long term radial velocity survey of central stars are presented. From 33 usable targets some 40% are found to be variable. However, 7/13 variable objects have spectra indicating a luminous secondary and hence we are subject to a bias in our sample. Removal of this selection effect, and assuming that all motions detected are the result of binarity, then the observed binary fraction at intermediate periods is about 18%. Thus including the fraction observed on other timescales the observed binary fraction is ˜40%. If corrections are made for unseen companions, which the instrumentation was not sensitive to, then we suspect this figure is probably in line with that found for field stars in the solar neighbourhood.
