Deep multicolour data are available for one of the few samples of sub-mJy radio sources with multi-frequency radio coverage. The radio/optical analysis of this sample (extracted from the ATESP survey) has revealed a class of flat/inverted radio-spectrum sources associated with early-type galaxies up to redshift 2. They might be triggered by AGN, but radio powers and sizes are not consistent with those of standard radio galaxy populations. A possible explanation invokes low radiative efficiency accretion (ADAF) models, in some cases possibly coexisting with outflows or jets. Multi-frequency (20, 13, 6, 3 cm and 12 mm) quasi-simultaneous observations of such objects will give us insight into the accretion mechanism which is at work, since different accreting regimes display different spectral signatures in the radio domain. This in turn will allow us to study the origin of the radio emission in the faint radio population, with particular respect to the the low/intermediate luminosity AGN component. It is clear that assessing the relevance of the nuclear activity (in its possible accreting regimes) at deep radio fluxes can have important implications on the study of the black-hole acrretion history with radio-selected samples.
