This paper describes a comparison of Aerosol Optical Depths (AODs) computed in the Visible and near IR channels of the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) wherein measurements of split thermal channels of AVHRR have been used for water vapour correction. The comparison of AODs computed from AVHRR and the ground-based Multi Wavelength Radiometer (MWR) showed AOD differences in the 0.02 - 0.04 and zero - 0.02 ranges for visible and near IR band respectively. Analysis of three consecutive days of AOD images described the changeover from marine to continental aerosol regime in the Arabian sea.
