Scientific paper

It is shown here that the effects of mass dependent WR mass loss on the nucleosynthesis yield of very massive stars are: (1) an increased amount of radioactive 26Al ejected into the ISM; (2) an increased yield of helium and carbon (12C); (3) a high probability for a supernova explosion instead of collapse into a black hole, with production of oxygen through iron according to a ZAMS mass of ≡15 Msun. The WR formation rate itself is a sensitive function of the intrinsic metallicity. Consequently, the contribution of very massive stars to the carbon production during early galactic evolution is small, and black holes might have been formed more frequently.
