By using careful profile subtraction on deep ground-based images at large image scales of a sample of high-luminosity QSOs, we have found a surprising number of cases for which there has been a close companion galaxy or other strongly asymmetrical structure in the previously unexplored inner 3" around the QSO. We propose to examine this structure in more detail in one of these objects, 3C48, by obtaining deep PC images in a broad but essentially line-free passband. We have carried out simulations that allow us to use our experience in ground-based imaging of this and similar objects to estimate the feasibility of the observations, and we find that we should be able to obtain high-resolution imaging of the features we observe. These observations are crucial for establishing the nature of these features, which, because they occur so frequently, are likely to be important for our understanding of the QSO phenomenon. If, as we presently suspect, they are mostly interacting (and possibly merging) companion galaxies, the HST observations will be an important component in seeking to model the interactions, which will help us answer questions regarding the QSO triggering process, QSO lifetimes, and the relation between QSOs and the ultraluminous infrared galaxies.
