An understanding of stellar populations in galaxies at large redshifts depends upon interpretation of their integrated spectra. Unfortunately, integrated light techniques have not yet matched the precision possible with detailed color-magnitude diagrams (CMD's), and a definitive connection between the two approaches has yet to be made. HST has the unique ability to bridge the gap between the integrated light and CMD methods of analyzing stellar populations. This permits, for the first time, direct comparison of the two techniques for important fiducial systems such as Local Group globular clusters and the bright cores of nearby galaxies. We propose to address theintegrated light side of this comparison by obtaining high signal-to-noise ultraviolet spectra with the FOS of selected globular clusters and galaxy nuclei and analyzing them in the context of a large existing set of supporting IUE and ground-based data which we have assembled.
