The purpose of this proposal is to obtain middle and high resolution profiles of the D Lyman alpha line emitted by the Jovian upper atmosphere near the planet approaching limb, with the G160M grating and the LSA.The analysis of the profiles resulting from the limb scan, will provide, through our radiative transfer calculations and photochemistry models, the possibility for the first time to retrieve the abundance and the scale height of the deuterium at least in two locations of the upper atmosphere of Jupiter. On the other hand, continuous observations of Jupiter's H Lyman alpha emission since 1969, are slowly providing more precise evaluation of the [H] total content above the methane level. Recent IUE data, and short-term observation with the GHRS, are now providing this parameter with higher precision. A precise estimate of the D/H ratio will therefore be inferred. Contrary to Infra-red measurements where the chemical isotopic fractionation introduces a large uncertainty, the present method will provide a direct measure of the D/H ratio.
