We propose to obtain FOC images of 1 compact steep spectrum (CSS) radio source through filters isolating [OII]3727 and the nearby continuum. CSS sources are very powerful but small radio sources which are confined on sub-galactic scales. They provide the best laboratories in which to study the interaction of radio jets with the ISM. Since a large fraction of intermediate z radio galaxies are CSS sources, these objects must spend a large fraction of their lives in the CSS phase. To confine the radio jets, the host galaxies of CSS sources must contain large amounts of gas. Thus the CSS sources may be low z analogs of the ultra high z radio galaxies. Interaction between the radio jets and gas may result in ongoing jet induced star formation. Compression of the outflowing radio plasma may produce optical synchrotron emission. The high resolving power of HST will allow a detailed comparison of the radio structure (2") with the narrow emission line region in the AGN. CSS radio structures show strong distortions which are attributed to the interaction of the radio jets with the ambient NLR. Since CSSs have radio sizes which closely match the NLR they are unique objects in which to study the radio-jet/NLR-gas interaction. We will use the line free images to subtract the continuum from the [OII] image and to study continuum light associated with optical synchrotron emission originating in the hotspots and jet.
