The primary goal of this proposal is to demonstrate and utilize the capability of the FGSs to perform absolute angular diameter measurements of minor planets larger than 15 mas. Extant diameter estimates lack homogeneity and are often derived from physical models whose calibrations are based on severely limited empirical data. This program is designed to asses the ability of the FGSs to help overcome these limitations. As approved and directed by the Cycle 3 TAC, three asteroids of different, known, angular sizes between 20 mas and 100 mas will be observed in the center of the astrometer FGS. The minor planets have been selected so that observations will take place around opposition in order to minimize the problems involved with acquiring and observing moving targets.
