This paper summarizes results in developing two new methods—numerical and geometrical, for improving the accuracy of waveform extraction using characteristic evolution. The numerical method consists of circular boundaries for the spherical cross-sections of the outgoing null cones. Angular dissipation is added in order to damp the high-frequency error arising from the irregular way the circular patch boundary cuts through the grid. The geometric method involves use of the Weyl tensor component Ψ04 to extract the waveform at null infinity, instead of the original approach via the Bondi news function. These methods are compared and calibrated in test problems based upon linearized waves.
