The method of Jorgensen (1991) and Jorgensen and Thejll (1993), which allows a fast and accurate evaluation of the evolution of low-mass stars in a continuous range of metallicities, is used to examine the conditions for progenitors of UV-bright asymptotic giant branch (AGB) manque stars to form in galaxies of various metallicities. In particular, it is found that, among the recently published zero-age horizontal branch (ZAHB) models identified as potential progenitors for the 'slow blue' AGB manque stars, only those of the AGB models that have the ratio R (R = the helium enrichment relative to metallicity enrichment) slightly above the solar value can have evolved into the horizontal-branch phase within the present age of the universe (with a reasonable amount of mass loss at the red giant branch). Only these stars show the necessary functional number increase with metallicity.
