Results are presented of a spectroscopic study of abundances of H II regions in 15 early-type galaxies, ranging in type from Sa to Sb, selected according to the criteria of morphological type, small distance, low inclination, and the presence of observable H II regions. It was found that the abundances in early-type spiral galaxies show a large intrinsic dispersion and tend to have higher metallicities than in galaxies of later morphological type. It was also found that the effect of dust is unimportant in explaining the lower luminosities of H II regions in the early-type galaxies; their observed faintness must be due to such factors as changes in the size of the ionizing associations, or changes in the interplanetary magnetic field. Those early-type galaxies which have H II regions over a large range of galactocentric radius were found to exhibit slightly shallower abundance gradients than published samples of late-type spirals.
