In the last few years, an important fraction of the ESO VLT time has been used to search for magnetic fields in a large variety of stellar objects, from Herbig stars, to chemically peculiar stars, accreting binary stars, hot sub-dwarfs, white dwarfs, etc. The large majority of these magnetic field surveys have been carried out using FORS1 in spectropolarimetric mode. Here we shortly review the instrument characteristics, the data reduction strategies, the method used for the field determination, and some of the scientific outputs of the observations carried out. Finally, we report about the discovery of a cross-over effect between linear and circular polarization.
