The unique and powerful diagnostic capabilities of many infrared spectral lines in the solar spectrum were recognized in the early days of solar physics by the pioneers of solar astronomy. The full potential of these IR diagnostics was finally realized with the advancement of IR array technology in the early 1990s. More importantly, after almost two decades of research, it is now generally recognized that multiwavelength imaging, spectroscopic, and spectropolarimetric observations that offer complementary diagnostics are needed to further improve our understanding of the complicated MHD processes of the Sun. This paper briefly reviews the development of modern IR solar polarimetry, its current status, and existing instrument and telescope projects. Suggestions for the development of future instrumentation will also be offered.
