The population of trans-neptunian objects trapped, like Plutino, in the 3:2 mean-motion resonance with Neptune are commonly known as plutinos. The Plutino libration argument and inclination distributions are likely relics of Neptune's migration during the final evolution of the current configuration of the outer Solar System. However, there are strong detection biases in observational surveys for these two parameters.
Applying the CFEPS survey simulator to the characterized fields covered by the Canada-France Ecliptic Plane Survey, we illustrate the bias effects. We show that detailed knowledge of survey fields (even of the non-detections) is needed to diagnose the libration amplitude A joint analysis of the size and distance-at-detection distribution is needed to understand the properties of the detected sample. With the absolute CFEPS calibration we provide a population estimate of the number of objects with absolute H magnitudes (in g-band) less than 10. The need for a sub-population of plutinos which exhibit the Kozai oscillation inside the 3:2 resonance is addressed.
