Experimental verification of the expected increase in total plasmasphere electron content (Np) associated with a decrease in solar-wind speed (Vsw) is presented for two magnetic storms associated with large changes in Vsw and for which Np and Vsw data are available. Electron-content measurements made from an equatorial station are discussed which confirm an inverse relationship between Np and Vsw, the correlation coefficient being -0.92 + or - 0.05. The following linear relationship between Np and Vsw is obtained by the method of least squares: Np = 12.5(1 - Vsw/1000), where Vsw is in km/s and less than or approximately equal to 750.
