A novel general method for calculation of a geometric distortion between two images is presented. The coefficients for any kind of transformation of coordinates between two reference frames are found by minimizing an appropriate merit function. Several applications are discussed: optical distortion correction, detection of solar differential rotation in Hα full disk images, and seeing induced distortion removal between right- and left-circularly polarized images.
