Information on the nature of the invisible component of the eclipsing binary Epsilon Aur was obtained from observations of the UV spectrum of the binary carried out with the IUE in low-resolution mode for far UV and high resolution mode for near UV. Observations were made at phase 0.81 P. From the continuous flux corrected for scattered light and interstellar extinction the effective temperature and radius of the companion were estimated to be 15,000 plus or minus 3000 K and (1 plus or minus 0.5) times 10 to the 11th cm, respectively. The absorption line spectrum confirms that the companion is not very hot. Strong emission of O I at 1302 A indicates the existence of an envelope where hydrogen is mostly ionized. The companion is therefore a B-type star falling on or slightly below the main sequence with absolute bolometric magnitude about 7 mag fainter than the primary. The companion may be a past nova.
