The majority of Kuiper belt object satellites are similar in magnitude to their primary, and, of those measured, the majority have significantly non-circular orbits. Both of these properties have been explained as a consequence of a KBO-KBO capture mechanism operating early in the history of the solar system. The largest Kuiper belt objects, however, have satellites with a distinct set of properties. These satellites are smaller, more frequent, on circular orbits, and even come in multiple systems in two known cases. We review these properties of the satellites of the largest Kuiper belt objects and examine the hypothesis that these systems are the products of giant impacts analogous to that which created the earth-moon system.
