The detailed optical properties of white holes are examined within the framework of geometrical optics. It is shown that the appearance of the objects most likely to be observed at late times is in fact determined by their early histories. These calculations indicate that one cannot invoke the simple concept of a stable white hole as a 'natural' explanation of highly energetic astrophysical phenomena.
