An analysis of the spectral shape and possible spurious distortions of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect in the millimetric region is presented. It is shown that IR detectors accurately provide more information on the effect than do radio systems. One advantage of the IR detectors is that they permit measurement of the cosmic background radiation temperature without requiring absolute calibration of the detector. Other applications resulting from study of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect are considered.
