We show that the probability-density function (p.d.f.) of solar p modes is related to 2 correlation functions which describe the properties of the excitation mechanism. If the p.d.f. are obtained through observations, it will be possible to locate the excitation and to put some constraints on solar convection. The easiest way to proceed is to observe the average power of individual Fourier frequencies.
